We are happy to inform you that Mr Jan Broeckx, Director, Ballett-Akademie der Hochschule für Musik und Theater München (Ballet Academy University of Music and Performing Arts Munich), is one of our Jury for SPERA2024 Online Edition!
Jan Broeckx has been the director of the Ballet Academy at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich since October 1, 2010. The native Belgian received his dance training in Antwerp at the internationally renowned Royal Ballet School Antwerp, based on the Vaganova system, and won the Prix de Lausanne in 1978 at the age of 17. Subsequently, he received multiple offers and contracts as a principal dancer (from 1978 to 1986 with the Ballet of Flanders, from 1981 to 1985 at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, and later with the Bavarian State Ballet Munich). Additionally, he was an internationally sought-after guest and star dancer, performing with the London Festival Ballet, La Scala in Milan, and the Dutch National Ballet in Amsterdam. He was also a welcome guest at major gala events, including the World Ballet Festival in Tokyo, the Gala des Etoiles in Montreal, and the Nijinsky Gala in Hamburg.
Roland Petit saw him dance in Berlin (1982) and invited him first as a guest and later as a Danseur Etoile to join the Ballet National de Marseille. During this long collaboration, Jan Broeckx interpreted numerous roles in Petit's ballets and, as one of his closest associates, staged Petit's works in renowned theaters worldwide, such as the Paris Opera, La Scala in Milan, the Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires, the Bolshoi Ballet, the Kirov Ballet, and others. In collaboration with his mentor, he founded the school "École National Supérieur de Danse Marseille." His worldwide reputation as a dancer, teacher, and choreographic assistant makes him an internationally sought-after guest at ballet competitions. His work in film and television, as well as his activities as a ballet master (including at La Scala in Milan and the Zurich Opera House), and his teaching activities complement the work of Jan Broeckx, who was named "Artist of the Year" in Munich in 1985. Choreographically and as a dancer, he has worked alongside Roland Petit with Rudolf Nureyev, George Balanchine, John Cranko, Hans van Manen, Rudi van Dantzig, Nils Christe, Ronald Hynd, Peter Schaufuss, and Jiri Kylian, and danced with world stars such as Alessandra Ferri, Altinai Asylmuratova, Lucia Lacarra, and the famous Zizi Jeanmaire.
